Commercial Certificate of Competence

Whatever your job is on board a vessel in the 'commercial' world you are considered to be a professional seafarer and as such you can be held account if things go wrong. You must hold the correct certificate. We can help you on the way if you want to work on smaller vessel (up to 24m in length) and up to 20 miles off shore.

A commercial certificate of Competence can be attached to your RYA Power boat qualification. Both the RYA Powerboat Level 2 and the RYA Advanced Powerboat certificates can be commercially endorsed.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Commercial Endorsement

This certificate allows the holder to work up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point(s) and never more than 3 miles from land in favorable weather and daylight.

The requirements are that the applicant must have:

  1. RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate (Original) with at least 12 month experience
  2. Professional Practices and Responsibilities Certificate see HERE
  3. Commercial Endorsement Application Form HERE
  4. Your Original ML5 medical certificate – click here to download. This must be completed a registered doctor – your local G.P. will be able to help you with this.
  5. RYA Basic Sea Survival Certificate or Personal Survival Techniques STCW78 HERE
  6. RYA First Aid Certificate or equivalent as detailed on the RYA website HERE
  7. RYA SRC Certificate or acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operators Certificate HERE
  8. Passport size photograph of the applicant
  9. Fee of £33 payable to the RYA

The Advanced Certificate of Competence allows you to work on smaller boats (up to 24m) that don’t tend to undertake long of off shore passages. With relevant experience (see appendix 3 of the MGN280 here) you can work up to 20 miles off shore.

To gain the Advanced Certificate of Competence you need to pass a practical exam. To sit the exam you need to have had the following experience: 30 days sea time, 2 day as skipper, 800 miles and 12 night hours. If you hold the RYA Advanced powerboat Certificate then this is reduced to 20 day, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12 night hours.

The examiner is a an independent RYA examiner. The exam is taken in one day; there is a written element, a navigational element as well as both a daylight and nighttime practical element on the boat.

Once you pass the exam, the examiner will send all the information to the RYA. On the day of the exam you will need:

  1. RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate (Original) if you hold one and want this certificate commercially endorsed
