Commercial Certificate of Competence (COC) £595

The commercially endorsed Certificate of Competence (COC) is an RYA issued qualification for those wishing to operate crafts commercially up to 3 miles from land during the day for commercially endorsed PB2 and up to 20 miles from land by day or night for commercially endorsed RYA Powerboat Advanced.

A Commercial Certificate of Competence can be attached to RYA powerboat qualifications, including the RYA Powerboat Level 2 and the RYA Advanced Powerboat certificates.

Required previous experience/qualifications

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Commercial Endorsement

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate (original) with at least 12 months’ experience

  • Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate

  • Commercial endorsement application form

  • Your original ML5 medical certificate – this must be completed a registered doctor (your GP will be able to help with this)

  • RYA Basic Sea Survival Certificate or Personal Survival Techniques STCW78

  • RYA First Aid certificate or equivalent

  • RYA VHF/SRC Certificate or acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operators Certificate

  • Passport size photograph of the applicant

  • Fee of £33 payable to the RYA

RYA Advanced Powerboat Commercial Endorsement

  • To sit the exam you need to have had the following experience: 30 days sea time, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles and 12 night hours (if you hold the RYA Advanced Powerboat certificate this is reduced to 20 days, 2 skipper days, 400 miles and 12 night hours)

  • RYA Advanced Powerboat certificate (original) if you hold one and want this certificate commercially endorsed

  • Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate

  • Commercial endorsement application form

  • Your original ML5 medical certificate – this must be completed a registered doctor (your GP will be able to help with this)

We offer a pre-exam refresher day if required for those wanting to take the COC, this is priced at £315.
