The aim of the RYA Dayskipper Theory course is to give prospective skippers and crew a comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship, preparing you to make the key decisions needed to skipper a small vessel confidently in familiar waters.

Required previous experience

The course is open to anyone. Some practical boating experience is desirable but not required. We recommend anyone unsure whether this course is right for them to give us a call to talk through their previous experience.

Method of learning

This course runs over 40 hours plus exam time. We offer flexible learning options so you can complete the course in a way that suits you. It also provides a valuable base of knowledge for anyone considering going on to the RYA Dayskipper Practical course.

  • Reading and plotting positions and courses on nautical charts

• Position fixing

  • Establishing an accurate position at sea using a range of techniques

• Plotting a course to steer

  • Working out and plotting the course needed to reach a destination, accounting for tide and leeway

• Weather forecasting and meteorology

  • Interpreting forecasts and understanding their significance for small craft

• Tides

  • Understanding tidal heights and streams and their effect on passage planning

• Collision regulations

  • Understanding the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)
